Materials Used in the Manufacturing of Biodegradable Products

Bio-degradation – is the disintegration of materials by bacteria, fungi, or other biological means.

The following are some of the materials used in the manufacturing of Eco-friendly products.

  • Cornstarch

Corn starch, cornstarch, cornflour or maize starch or maize is the starch derived from the corn grain. The starch is obtained from the endosperm of the kernel. Corn starch is a common food ingredient, used in thickening sauces or soups, and in making corn syrup and other sugars. Once it is converted to a thermoplastic polyester known as PLA, cornstarch is strong just like regular plastic only it is completely compostable. Though, it can't withstand high temperatures, PLA is a versatile material that can be used in a variety of ways.
  • Sugarcane / Bagasse

Bagasse is the fibrous matter or dry pulpy residue that remains after sugarcane or sorghum stalks are crushed to extract their juice. Bagasse is used as a bio-fuel and in theĀ  manufacture of pulp and building materials. 100% biodegradable and compostable.

  • Paper

A material made of cellulose pulp, derived mainly from wood, rags, and certain grasses, processed into flexible sheets or rolls by deposit from aqueous suspension.
  • Polylactic acid (PLA)

Poly(lactic acid) or polylactic acid or polylactide (PLA) is a biodegradable and bio-active thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable biomass, typically from fermented plant starch such as from corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp.

  • Wood

Whether it is birch, pinewood, or poplar they are 100% biodegradable and compostable.
  • Palm

Sheaths of a palm tree, naturally dry, fall, and regenerate all on their own are 100% biodegradable and compostable.

  • Bamboo

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet, growing as much as 24 inches every night. Needs very little water to grow and zero chemicals needed. It is 100% biodegradable and compostable.
